About Price Detector

We're on a mission to end overpaying.

Every day, millions of shoppers in the UK waste money buying products at inflated prices, simply because they didn't know a better deal existed three clicks away. We built Price Detector to fix that.

How it started

Back in 2015, I was building websites and watching the UK ecommerce landscape explode. More retailers meant more choice, but it also meant more chaos. Finding the actual best price for anything became a proper nightmare. You'd need fifteen tabs open, checking every site manually, never quite sure if you'd found the real deal.

So in 2025, we built Price Detector. Not as a side project or a weekend experiment, but as a proper solution to a problem that annoyed the hell out of me (and probably you too).

What we actually do

Price Detector scans thousands of products across dozens of UK retailers in real-time. When you search for something, we show you every legitimate option, sorted by actual price, not by who paid us the most for ad placement.

No hidden fees. No "sponsored results" disguised as recommendations. Just the information you need to make a smart buying decision.

Who's behind this

I'm Matt Hodson, and I've spent the last decade building websites and digital platforms through my company, Search Ventures Ltd. I've seen every trick in the book when it comes to online retail: the dark patterns, the artificial urgency, the deliberately confusing pricing.

Price Detector is my attempt to build something that's actually on your side.

We're building the product first

Right now, Price Detector is completely non-profit. We're following the Steve Jobs model: build something genuinely brilliant, then work backwards to figure out monetisation.

Too many comparison sites start with the business model and let it corrupt the product. They show you "best deals" that are really just "best commissions." We're doing it the other way round.

Our focus is on creating the most accurate, comprehensive, and genuinely useful price comparison tool in the UK. Once we've nailed that, we'll explore sustainable ways to keep the lights on, without compromising what makes Price Detector worth using in the first place.

Why trust us?

Because we have no reason to lie to you yet. We're not optimising for revenue per click or hiding better deals to push worse ones. We're just trying to build something that actually works the way you'd want it to work.

We're transparent about how we operate. We're straight with you about our plans. And we're constantly improving our scanning technology to make sure you're seeing accurate, up-to-date information.

When the time comes to monetise, we'll do it openly and honestly. You'll know exactly how we make money and why that doesn't affect the results you see.
