The PWM Malevolent is a compact yet powerful semi-modular analogue synthesiser designed for both beginners and experienced musicians exploring modular synthesis. It features a pure analogue signal path developed in collaboration with Future Sound Systems, offering a versatile sound engine capable of producing everything from deep basslines and soaring leads to percussive elements and experimental soundscapes. The semi-modular design includes 19 patch points using standard 3.5mm jacks, allowing for extensive signal routing and integration with other modular gear while maintaining a normalised internal signal path for immediate playability straight out of the box. Key features include two voltage-controlled oscillators (VCOs) with multiple waveform outputs, a multi-mode 2-pole voltage-controlled filter (VCF), two ADSR envelopes, and a low-frequency oscillator (LFO). The built-in 32-note velocity-sensitive keyboard provides tactile control, complemented by a multi-function joystick for pitch bend, portamento, and vibrato. A 6-mode arpeggiator with hold function and automatic clock sync adds rhythmic possibilities. The synth also includes a voltage-controlled amplifier (VCA) with an overdrive circuit for added warmth and saturation, and it can be powered via USB bus power for portability. The Malevolent is particularly well-suited for musicians taking their first steps into modular synthesis due to its intuitive layout and self-contained nature, yet its extensive patching capabilities and unique sonic character make it a compelling addition to any seasoned synthesist's setup.
